Musicians across Vancouver Island are being invited to dust off their recorders, violins and guitars this week for a chance to earn a free treat.
On Friday, February 21st, COBS Bread locations across Canada, including those on Vancouver Island, will take part in the return of Hot Cross Buns Day.
The one-day “Play to Pay” initiative rewards customers who perform the classic tune “Hot Cross Buns” in-bakery with a free handcrafted hot cross bun.
The event follows what the company describes as a viral response last year, when bakeries were filled with impromptu performances from young musicians and families revisiting a familiar elementary school melody.
To participate, customers simply need to visit their local COBS Bread bakery on February 21st and perform the well-known tune on any instrument. Those who prefer can also hum the melody to qualify for the free baked-from-scratch bun.
“The overwhelming support we saw from last year’s Hot Cross Buns Day was a clear indication of the vital role music plays in shaping the next generation,” said Aaron Gillespie, president of COBS Bread.
“We’re so excited to bring back Hot Cross Buns Day this year to help celebrate aspiring young musicians and the joy of making music at any level.”
In addition to the musical performances, the company’s Doughnation Day campaign is also underway. From February 7th to March 7th, participating bakeries across the country are raising funds in support of local community causes, with donations accepted in-bakery and online.
COBS Bread operates more than 180 locations nationwide, including several in Greater Victoria and other Vancouver Island communities.
Musicians are encouraged to share their performances on social media using the hashtag #HotCrossBunsDay2026.
