Victoria General Hospital to build new $75.6M energy centre for future growth

Construction is set to begin this summer on a major infrastructure upgrade at Victoria General Hospital (VGH) that officials say will help ensure the hospital can meet the needs of a growing region for decades to come.

In a media release, Island Health says the new energy centre at VGH in View Royal will modernize and strengthen the hospital’s power system.

With the region’s population projected to grow significantly over the next 25 years, and the hospital’s current energy system already nearing capacity, the project will provide updated electrical infrastructure to support new medical equipment, technology and additional services.

“It’s critical that the infrastructure people rely on is built to last,” said Darlene Rotchford, MLA for Esquimalt-Colwood. “The new energy centre will ensure the hospital can continue to deliver safe, reliable care as the region continues to grow.”

According to Island Health, the new facility will be designed to modern standards that allow the hospital to remain operational during major disruptions, including power outages, earthquakes or flooding.

Officials say the upgrades are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted care for patients as services expand in the years ahead.

“This investment strengthens the hospital’s ability to meet the current and future needs of our communities,” said Leah Hollins, Island Health Board Chair.

“Patients rely on VGH every day. Ensuring we have reliable energy infrastructure means we can continue providing uninterrupted care and be ready for future demands.”

As part of early site preparation, tree removal will begin in mid-February and be completed before the start of the spring bird nesting season. Island Health said accredited arborists were consulted to determine which trees can be retained and which must be removed.

“Our region continues to grow, bringing more demand for hospital services,” said Kevin Murdoch, Chair of the Capital Regional Hospital District Board.

“This investment helps ensure both current and future residents can take comfort knowing their hospital will have the spaces, resources and capacity to help them and their loved ones when they need it.”

The $75.6 million project is jointly funded by the BC government through Island Health, contributing $52.9 million, and the Capital Regional Hospital District, contributing $22.7 million.

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2026 and be completed in 2029.
