Greater Victoria is under a wind warning this afternoon as Environment Canada issues its first yellow-rated alert for the region under the country’s new colour-coded system.
The agency says strong westerly winds near 60 km/h, gusting up to 90 km/h, are expected from this afternoon into the evening in areas near the Juan de Fuca Strait, including Victoria.
According to forecasters, a frontal system is sweeping across the south coast today. Light to moderate southeast winds will shift sharply to strong westerlies as the system moves through, before easing later this evening.
The conditions may lead to isolated power outages, and residents are advised to secure loose items and be prepared for quickly changing driving conditions.
This marks the first time the newly introduced yellow alert has been used in Victoria.
The national system, launched in late November, assigns colour codes to help people quickly understand the severity of a weather event.
Yellow alerts warn of potentially hazardous conditions that could disrupt daily life, while orange and red alerts signify more serious and potentially destructive events.
Some iPhone users reported that the alert appeared on their devices with the unfamiliar term “housewrek.” It remains unclear whether the wording is connected to the new alert system or a separate issue with Apple’s notification display.
Environment Canada says the winds should ease later this evening.
