The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has provided an update on an arrest in Saanich that resulted in the injury of one man.
The arrest took place on the evening of July 15th, when Saanich Police responded to the 4500-block of Granville Avenue.
Police say multiple 911 callers reported a man acting erratically in traffic, and had allegedly been threatening drivers.
The man was located and police attempted to arrest him; however, a police service dog involved in the arrest reportedly caused injuries to the suspect.
He was then was taken into custody, then to a hospital for treatment.
The injured suspect was a man in his 40s, who has since been released from hospital and is recovering from his injuries.
According to IIO, his injuries were confirmed to meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, which automatically triggered an investigation into the incident.
As part of their investigation, IIO conducted interviews with all witnesses and involved police officers and are now awaiting more detailed medical information to complete the investigation.
IIO is an independent oversight agency of officers and detention guards in BC that investigates all incidents that result in serious harm or death.
