BC’s police watchdog has released new details about an April incident in Nanaimo that left four people injured.

According to the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO), the collision occurred shortly before midnight on April 26th.

An officer driving a marked police vehicle attempted to stop a blue motorcycle at approximately 11:40 p.m. that night, but the vehicle managed to get away.

The motorcycle was being ridden by two male youths, and was later involved in a collision with a taxi near Victoria Road and Milton Street.

A man and woman were inside the taxi at the time.

The occupants of the taxi were not seriously hurt, but the youths sustained serious injuries in the crash and are now recovering at home.

IIO says canvassing and interviews with all identified witnesses have been completed, along with interviews involving officers and professionals who attended the scene.

The agency is now waiting on reports from specialist services analyzing evidence from the incident.

IIO are continuing to investigate whether any police action or inaction played a role in the collision and resulting injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken with investigators is asked to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477.
