BC Hydro launches energy-saving challenge which could save $100 on electricity bills

BC Hydro has launched a challenge and is offering $100 off energy bills for those who can cut their energy usage by 10% over one-year’s time.

According to the energy company, this reward could be enough to cover a month or more of electricity bills, especially for condo or apartment dwellers.

Beginning on November 1st, through January 31st, of next year, BC Hydro customers can log in to their online account and join ‘Team Power Smart’ to take on the reduction challenge.

Those who take part and are able to reduce energy usage by 10% over the span of 12 months will earn the $100 credit to their bill, which is twice the typical $50 reward for reduction.

“As we move into the colder, darker months, electricity bills often rise due to increased heating, lighting, and appliance use,” said Susie Rieder, BC Hydro spokesperson.

“For many customers, especially those in apartments or smaller homes, this reward could cover a full month or more of electricity costs. And by reducing your energy use, you’ll also see ongoing savings on your monthly bills.”

When this challenge was launched last year, over 75,000 BC households were able to earn the $100 reward.

BC Hydro says that the challenge resulted in the saving of 19 gigawatt hours, which is enough to power over 2,500 homes for a year.

To help those who are unsure of how to go about reducing energy-usage, BC Hydro has even made a list of suggestions for easy places to start:

  • Programming the thermostat to reduce heating when you are asleep or away
  • Sealing drafts around windows and doors to prevent heat loss
  • Switching to LED bulbs, which use up to 75% less energy than incandescent ones
  • Using energy-efficient appliances
  • Installing low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators
  • Washing clothes in cold water
  • Using smaller appliances such as an air fryer, microwave, toaster oven, or slow cooker instead of the oven

Additionally, BC Hydro says that those who join Team Power Smart also get access to monthly contests and deals throughout the year.
