West Shore RCMP are looking into a recent hacking incident involving a local construction company’s computer system.
This breach allowed the hackers to send fake invoices to clients earlier this month.
The company reported the breach in October and notified its clients about the fraudulent invoices to help prevent further financial losses.
Investigators think this incident reflects a rising trend of cybercrime aimed at small and medium-sized businesses throughout BC.
“Cybercrime and fraud targeting businesses are becoming increasingly sophisticated,” said Cpl. Nancy Saggar, Media Relations Officer with West Shore RCMP.
“We encourage all businesses and individuals to take proactive steps to secure their systems and verify any suspicious financial requests before taking action.”
West Shore RCMP released some tips on how to protect your business from online scams:
- Use strong, unique passwords and update them regularly
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) where possible
- Verify invoices and payment requests by contacting the business directly
- Be cautious with email attachments and links
- Keep antivirus software up to date and back up important data
- Educate staff on how to recognize phishing attempts
Anyone who believes their business or personal information may have been compromised is asked to contact the West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264 or their local police department.
