A warning has been issued for Nanaimo residents as scammers make their way through the community.
In a media release, Nanaimo RCMP said they received two complaints in recents weeks of individuals passing themselves off as Red Cross canvassers.
Both incidents occurred on October 8th, in the Uplands Drive area. There were no further incidents reported and no reports of money being handed over.
Those who reported the incidents told police that two men in their early twenties were seen going door to door asking for donations for the Red Cross.
They did not believe they were with the Red Cross and they did not give them any money. The incidents were immediately reported, and patrols made but the two men were not located.
“These types of scams pop up from time to time in every community. Even with only two reports and none recently, we felt it was prudent to let the public know and to be aware, “ said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
RCMP followed up with the Red Cross and were told that their canvassers will be dressed in appropriate Red Cross clothing such as jackets or shirts, they will have either an I-pad or tablet with them, and a Red Cross ID tag that is clearly visible.
Additionally, they will not ask for cash or one-time donations, but only monthly donations.
