BCGEU job action disrupts ICBC driver licensing services across BC

Share

Ongoing job action by the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) at ServiceBC locations is now affecting ICBC driver licensing services across the province.

According to ICBC, some services normally handled through ServiceBC offices, including road tests, knowledge testing, and license renewals, are being disrupted due to picket lines and staff walkouts.

Where possible, ICBC has temporarily moved road test appointments from affected ServiceBC offices to nearby ICBC claim centers.

Impacted customers are being contacted directly, while other locations continue operating with site-specific arrangements. However, ICBC confirmed that counter services such as knowledge testing and license renewals are currently unavailable at all ServiceBC locations.

Drivers needing these services are being redirected to visit the nearest ICBC driver licensing office or an authorized driver licensing agent.

The latest service disruptions come as nearly 25,000 BCGEU members across 431 worksites join the strike, closing all government-run liquor and cannabis stores as well as ServiceBC offices provincewide.

Union president Paul Finch said the escalation follows months of stalled negotiations with the provincial government over fair wage increases and working conditions.

“We don’t take this escalation lightly, and we know that disruptions to services are difficult for the public,” Finch said. “The government has a choice — they can sit down and bargain with us, or they can continue to let this disruption escalate.”

The BCGEU states that its members will stay off the job until serious talks restart. They emphasize that the strike is about more than just pay; it’s about respect and long-term funding for public services.

“We recognize the inconvenience this may cause for our customers and appreciate their patience as we work to minimize disruptions as much as possible. Our priority remains ensuring customers can access the services they need,” said ICBC in a media statement.
