Time to prepare for back-to-school season!
As we officially near September, families across BC are getting ready to send their kids to school for another season—many of which can expect brand-new schools and additions.
One of the most noteworthy openings is the SĆIȺNEW̱ SṮEȽIṮḴEȽ Elementary opening in Langford, on track to welcome students this year.
The name was gifted by the Scia’new First Nation, and is pronounced schee-ay-nuh ska-leetk-luth, meaning “salmon children” in the SENĆOŦEN language.
“Langford is a great place to call home, and I am thrilled to see the new SĆIȺNEW̱ SṮEȽIṮḴEȽ Elementary school opening for students,” said Ravi Parmar, MLA for Langford-Highlands.
“I can’t wait to see the halls filled with laughter, backpacks on the hooks and the start of new memories for the students.”
According to a media release, the school is four-storeys tall and 45,000 square feet, adding 16 classrooms and 480 seats for grades kindergarten to Grade 5. It’s part of a broader promise to meet the community’s long-term enrollment needs.
“We’ve been working hard to build and deliver new schools to meet the needs of students now and in the future,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure.
“Our historic investments in school infrastructure are already making a meaningful difference for BC students, and we look forward to welcoming young learners into even more brand-new classrooms this fall.”
Other areas opening new schools in BC include Trail, Abbotsford, Delta, Kelowna, Richmond and Surrey, among others.
Since 2017, BC has invested more than $6 billion toward school projects, resulting in nearly 43,000 new spaces.
