A new wildfire has been discovered near Nanaimo over the weekend and is currently determined to be ‘out of control,’ by the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).
Dubbed the Mason Creek wildfire, this blaze is around 7.7 hectares in size and is located a little over 10 kilometres southwest of Nanaimo.
This wildfire was discovered on Sunday, August 24th, and details on BCWS’s response are limited at this time.
As of this publication, the cause of this fire is still under investigation.
There are currently three other active wildfires on Vancouver Island at this time: the Wesley Ridge wildfire, the Mount Underwood wildfire and the Nahmint Mountain wildfire.
Recently, all evacuation orders and alerts have been lifted on the Wesley Ridge blaze, as it has been determined to now be ‘under control’ by BCWS.
However, one evacuation order and one alert remain in place for those in the vicinity of the Mount Underwood wildfire.
The Mount Underwood blaze has reduced to be 3,525 hectares in size, and has been declared ‘being held’ by BCWS.
Due to the severity of this wildfire, Franklin River Road, between Port Alberni and Bamfield remains closed.
As of this publication, there are 67 active wildfires throughout British Columbia.
