One of Vancouver Island’s brightest stars shone on baseball’s biggest stage Tuesday night.

Lauren Spencer Smith, the Nanaimo-based singer-songwriter who rose to fame on American Idol, delivered a powerful rendition of O Canada ahead of the 2025 MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park in Atlanta on July 15th.

The annual event brought together the biggest names in Major League Baseball, from Shohei Ohtani to Aaron Judge, in what turned out to be a thrilling showdown between the American and National Leagues.

But before the bats were swung, it was Spencer Smith’s voice that set the tone.

Standing on the field beneath a clear Georgia sky, the 21-year-old performer wowed the crowd with her moving vocals, proudly representing both Canada and her Vancouver Island roots.

Spencer Smith first made headlines in 2020 as a top-20 finalist on American Idol, and has since seen her career skyrocket.

Born in Portsmouth, UK, she moved to Port Alberni at the age of three and grew up in Nanaimo, where her love for music began.

By age six, she was already performing in front of her school. Since then, she’s racked up millions of streams on platforms like iTunes, earned multiple Juno Award nominations, and performed on major stages including Wembley Stadium in London.

Her breakthrough came in 2022 when her self-released single Fingers Crossed went viral on TikTok and cracked the top 10 in several countries, including Australia and the UK. That success was followed by Flowers, which also charted internationally and later appeared on her 2023 debut album Mirror.

Spencer Smith’s All-Star Game appearance placed her among an A-list lineup of musical talent that included hip-hop legends Ludacris and Jermaine Dupri, both Atlanta natives, as well as country music stars Kane Brown and the Zac Brown Band.

Ludacris and Dupri were praised by MLB for their “entrepreneurial spirit, chart-topping catalogues, and relentless championing of local artists.”

But for Canadians tuning in, all eyes were on Lauren.

The game itself didn’t disappoint either.

After nine innings of tight play and a 6–6 tie, the matchup saw the first-ever “swing-off” in All-Star Game history. In this dramatic format, each team selected three players who each got three swings. The National League edged out the American League 4–3, with Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies hitting the deciding home run.

While the homerun derby finish made headlines, Spencer Smith’s anthem performance was a proud moment for Canadians, and another milestone for one of Vancouver Island’s most exciting musical talents.
