Spectrum Community School is trying to get a new all-weather turf field through fundraising efforts, and is currently just $1 million away from meeting their goal.
Over the past eight years, the school and its community have been working to collect donations to make this field a reality, replacing the current grass field that is impacted by weather conditions year-round.
According to the Greater Victoria School District (SD61), during the rainy season, the uneven grass fields are unusable due to drainage issues that cause flooding and muddy surfaces.
Because of this issue, Spectrum’s school sports teams have not played home games on the fields in 15 years.
“A new turf field is within reach and we are really counting on community support for this final stretch of fundraising,” says Aaron Norris, Principal, Spectrum Community School.
“We recognize that not everyone is able to give financially, but simply sharing the story of the school community’s efforts will help immensely.”
Last July, a fundraising event involving the Wrexham Association Football Club, owned in part by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, helped spike donations. Since this event, donations have been declining.
“We believe there are passionate individuals and groups in our community who would like to support the funding of a new turf field, especially during such a pivotal time in the fundraising process,” said Katrina Stride, Secretary Treasurer, SD61.
“Support through donations can be a powerful way to give back to the community, serve local youth, and elevate school amenities that are ultimately used by countless community organizations.”
SD61 says that when this project meets its goal, students and organizations will have access to a new facility and field that will greatly benefit the community.
