UPDATE: While no official update was released, the area around the Nanaino RCMP detachment has been cleared and reopened to the public.

Original:

The Nanaimo RCMP detachment has been closed to the public this afternoon due to a suspicious package that was left unclaimed.

The front entrance and parking lot of the detachment have been closed.

The unclaimed package was found on the front steps of the building, and was discovered at around 3 p.m. this afternoon.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was contacted and are enroute [sic] to investigate,” said the Nanaimo RCMP in a media release.

Police say updates will be provided.

Earlier this week, Westshore RCMP also had to deal with a bomb scare, also prompted by a suspicious package.
