Victoria streets to slow down as lower speed limits approved by council

Share

Soon, Victoria’s streets will begin to slow down as lower speed limits will be introduced to many corridors.

On Thursday, July 10th, the motion to adopt the Streets and Traffic Bylaw amendment was unanimously approved by Victoria’s city council.

This new amendment will see that all local streets have a reduced speed limit to 30 km/h, with arterial and collector streets also being reduced to 40 km/h.

Additionally, there are a small handful of streets which will see the speed limit set to 15 km/h and 20 km/h.

The only roads to remain with a speed limit of 50 km/h will be Blanshard Street, between Caledonia Avenue and Tolmie Avenue, and Douglas Street, between Caledonia Avenue and Tolmie Avenue.

The implementation plan for the changes this bylaw amendment will bring is still to come, but much of the official changes to speed limits will come as improvements and construction is conducted on corridors throughout the city.

“While the detailed plan isn’t available… as soon as a neighbourhood is identified, we will canvas the entire neighbourhood to tell them that it’s coming,” said Alec Johnson, Assistant Director, Development Services, Sustainable Planning and Community Development.

According to City staff, the work has already begun to officially reduce speeds on local streets to 30 km/h, working from the north end of the city to the south.

Arterial and collector roads will be reduced once a plan is created for implementation.
