A gas line was struck in the 800-block of Esquimalt Road Thursday afternoon, causing a full closure of the roadway between Dunsmuir Road and Head Street.

The incident, which appears to have occurred at a construction site, has prompted emergency crews to secure the area.

Fortis has responded to the scene and is currently working to resolve the issue. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

The Township of Esquimalt expects the road to be closed for the next two to four hours.

“Any necessary evacuations are currently being evaluated. This is an emerging situation, and updates will be posted on social media and via Esquimalt Alert,” the municipality said in a statement on Facebook.

Photos from the scene show dozens of construction workers waiting for the area to reopen. Authorities are urging the public to remain clear of the area until further notice.
