BC Highway Patrol has released their stats for the month of May, including Victoria Day long weekend numbers, and revealed they were overall happy with the results when compared to previous years.

This particular weekend was a part of the RCMP’s High Risk Driving and Motorcycle Awareness campaigns in May.

Province-wide, over 1,900 speeding tickets were issued, and 79 vehicles were impounded over the long weekend.

According to a media release, Vancouver Island motorists were reportedly issued over 1,500 tickets over the course of May, which included 53 excessive speed charges with a vehicle impound. Specific numbers for the long weekend weren’t released.

“We had a lot of positive public feedback about the impact of BC Highway Patrol’s high-visibility enforcement, and we’re very happy to do our part to reduce deaths on our roads,” says Superintendent Mike Coyle of BC Highway Patrol.

“We still find too many examples of irresponsible driving.”
