More cougar sightings in Saanich prompt renewed warning from police

Saanich Police have confirmed new sightings of a cougar roaming residential streets, adding to a string of reports that began earlier this week.

The most recent encounter came just before 10 p.m. Thursday night, when a Saanich Police officer spotted the animal walking down the road in the 1000-block of Hulford Street—roughly a kilometre from where it was last seen.

That sighting followed earlier reports that began late Tuesday, May 14th, when the cougar was seen darting through backyards in the 3800-block of Rowland Avenue. Not long after, the animal was reportedly spotted crossing Highway 17 and appearing on the Lochside Trail near Swan Lake Park.

Saanich PD say the cougar’s movements are troubling given how close it’s getting to busy urban areas, and are urging residents to take extra care.

“The behaviour of the cougar is concerning,” police said in an update issued Thursday night. “Do not approach the animal, and if you encounter it, walk away slowly, then contact 911 and the BC Conservation Service at 1-877-952-7277.”

Police said officers continue to search the area and are working closely with the BC Conservation Officer Service.

Residents are being asked to remain alert, especially during evening hours, and to keep children and pets indoors if possible.

Though cougar sightings in Saanich aren’t unheard of due to the surrounding green spaces and trail systems, multiple sightings in a densely populated area over consecutive nights is unusual.

For those spending time outdoors, police are reminding the public to stay in groups, make noise on trails, carry bear spray, and avoid dusk or nighttime outings if possible. Pets should be kept leashed or fenced at all times.

Anyone who spots the cougar is urged to contact authorities immediately.
