Did you know that Victoria has a roller derby league?
Prepare to be blown away, because Victoria’s roller derby scene has been going strong for nearly two decades, thanks to the fierce and dedicated skaters of Eves of Destruction!
Founded in 2006, the Eves of Destruction league began with a handful of passionate athletes practicing in parking lots, and has since evolved into one of Canada’s most respected flat track roller derby organizations.
“Blood, sweat and tears went into getting roller derby off the ground in Victoria,” their website reads.
“Passionate skaters knew they wanted to play derby, but building a non-profit league from the ground up required significant dedication.”
Today, the Eves are a proud full member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), having achieved full membership in 2018 after joining the apprentice program in 2016.
Every aspect of the league is handled by the skaters themselves, highlighting their unwavering commitment to being community-driven.
The league boasts a diverse roster of teams catering to various skill levels and age groups:
- The A-Team: Represents the league in high-level competitions, showcasing the top talent from the Eves
- Belles of the Brawl, Margarita Villains, or the Daisy Pushers: These are the house teams and engage in spirited rivalries, competing annually for the coveted Calamity Cup
- Hard Cores: For newer skaters, they provide a platform to develop skills and gain experience before being drafted into one of the house teams
- The Rotten Apples: The junior team, welcoming skaters aged 10 to 18-years-old in a gender-inclusive environment
Their events often draw sell-out crowds, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm and support for the sport!
Hoping to catch a game? All of their games are listed on their website, so you can stay up to date on the latest.
Their next series of games will be the Capital City Chaos Tournament, which takes place over Friday, June 6th to Sunday, June 8th at the Archie Browning Sports Centre.
