Liberals win 4th straight mandate as Carney leads party to minority victory

Share

Canadians have handed the Liberals a fourth straight mandate after a tight election night across the country, with new leader Mark Carney pulling off a narrow win to keep the party in power.

While final numbers are still trickling in, the Liberals have already secured enough seats to form a minority government following Monday’s 45th federal election—an election shaped heavily by affordability concerns, trade tensions, and fresh threats of annexation from US President Donald Trump.

Carney, who took over leadership duties last year, promised to govern “for all Canadians” during his victory speech, emphasizing the need for unity after a divisive campaign.

Meanwhile, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre becomes the fourth consecutive Tory leader to come up short against the Liberals, who have now been in government since 2015.

Jagmeet Singh’s NDP and the Bloc Québécois both suffered major setbacks. Singh’s NDP is currently projected to snag just seven seats nationwide—down sharply from the 24 they held before the election. The Bloc could end up with around 23 seats, a drop from their previous 33.

Closer to home, the NDP also took a hit on Vancouver Island, losing at least three seats as of publication time. However, they were able to hold onto one important victory—incumbent NDP candidate Gord Johns successfully defended the Courtenay–Alberni riding.

The losses come with major leadership fallout after Singh announced Monday night that he will step down as NDP leader after losing his own riding of Burnaby Central to a Liberal challenger.

“It’s been the honour of my life to represent the people of Burnaby Central,” Singh said in a heartfelt concession speech. “Obviously I know this is a disappointing night for New Democrats. We had really good candidates who lost tonight. I know how hard you worked. I spent time with you—you are amazing.”

Singh said he will stay on until an interim leader is chosen.

With a minority government now confirmed, it’s shaping up to be an interesting few months ahead. Both the Bloc Québécois and the NDP could end up holding the balance of power in the next parliament, depending how the final seat counts settle.

Stay tuned—we’ll continue updating as more results come in!
