Vancouver Island-made film ‘Fragile Seeds’ now streaming across Canada

A film that was shot right here on Vancouver Island is now streaming across Canada.  

Fragile Seeds was written by and stars Victoria-based filmmaker Mia Golden, who is most well known as a documentarian, covering issues that impact island communities. 

But Fragile Seeds is no documentary—it is a dramatic thriller that will take audiences on a captivating journey that explores ethics quandaries in dark times. 

The film centers on Ryann Temple (Mia Golden), who must navigate her complicated and eccentric family, her relationships, all while juggling her work-life responsibilities as a therapist working with violent sex offenders.

Her two worlds collide as the romantic arc of Ryann’s personal journey intertwines with a client’s morbid fascination with his next victim.

With Fragile Seeds, the producers hoped this film would be able to raise awareness of issues related to the fragility of childhood.

Fragile Seeds was also directed by another Vancouver Island-based filmmaker,Joseph Boutilier, and was filmed in and around the Cowichan Valley. 

Boutilier owns and operates his film company, Empress Avenue Media Inc., out of the Cowichan Valley with co-producer Emrey Wright.

The film was a co-production between Empress Avenue Media and AMB Entertainment, owned by Ana Marie Butcura, who is a  long-time collaborator of Golden’s.

Fragile Seeds was shot over the course of 10 days during the pandemic. 

According to the filmmakers, it would not have been possible without the countless donations, support and locations they were allowed to use while filming. 

For this reason, the producers say they nicknamed the film, ‘the little movie that could.’ 

The film captivated audiences in its sold out festival screenings at the Victoria and Hamilton Film Festivals, and has received accolades and awards for its screenwriting, acting and cinematography.

Fragile Seeds is now available to stream on Tubi in Canada and the US, and it is also streaming on Amazon Prime in the US and the UK.
