Now that Justin Trudeau is out and Mark Carney is in as Prime Minister, the Liberals have had a surge of support in Canadian polls.
According to 388Canada polls, a snap election would likely result in a Liberal Party of Canada majority government.
As of Tuesday, March 18th, the Liberals and Conservatives are deadlocked at 38% for the popular vote among Canadians.
In the time since Trudeau resigned and Carney took over as Prime Minister, the Conservatives have fallen from 45% of the popular vote, and the Liberals have risen from just 20% to where they are now.
Additionally, as the Liberals have gained support in the polls, the NDP have also lost favour among Canadians.
When Trudeau resigned, they had 19% of the popular vote, but are now sitting at just 11%.
But despite the popular vote, current projections show that there is an 85% chance that the Liberals will win the majority of seats in the House of Commons, where the Conservatives have only a 15% chance.
This may be largely due to the fact that Carney was quick to call off the consumer carbon tax, which Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has been making his main campaign promise.
Now, Poilievre is saying that Carney did not go far enough, and he is promising to end the carbon tax to major industry polluters in Canada as well.
Since the announcement was made, BC Premier David Eby has announced that he too would be ending the BC carbon tax, just as soon as the end of the tax can be passed into legislation.
With the consumer carbon tax officially ending, Canadians who receive a rebate from the initiative, based on income, will get their last payment this April along with their quarterly GST/HST credit.
When it comes to BC in the federal polls, even though support for Canada’s NDP has fallen along with the Conservatives, Liberal support has surged.
Regardless of this surge in support, current polls still project the Conservatives are ahead in the popular vote with 41% of the popular vote compared to the Liberals’ 36%. Canada’s NDP only holds 15% of the popular vote in BC.
The next federal election must take place before October 2025; however, many are speculating that a snap election will be called in the coming days.
