Tragedy has struck Vancouver Island highways once again following a series of fatal accidents, with two more lives claimed in a tragic crash on March 12th.

The incident occurred just north of Campbell River, near Brown’s Bay, adding to a growing number of fatal collisions across the region in recent weeks.

According to the Campbell River RCMP, the collision involved a newer model Honda SUV that was travelling southbound on the North Island Highway.

At approximately 3 p.m., the vehicle veered off the road and collided with trees.

The driver and one passenger died at the scene, while two other passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

RCMP have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, though it is believed that a significant hailstorm in the area at the time may have contributed to the tragedy.

“The Campbell River RCMP wishes to offer our sincerest condolences to the families and the community of the victims,” said Cst. Maury Tyre. “We appreciate the public and media providing them time and space in these difficult times.”

This fatal accident adds to the increasing number of deadly incidents on Vancouver Island highways in recent weeks.

On March 1st, a man lost his life following a two-vehicle collision in Duncan. The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP responded to the scene at 7:08 p.m. at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Boys Road, where two pickup trucks had collided.

One vehicle, a Dodge Ram 3500, overturned, trapping two occupants inside. The driver of the other vehicle managed to escape before first responders arrived.

Earlier, on February 20th, two young men were killed in a tragic accident on the Nanaimo Parkway when their car, making a left turn against a red light, was struck by a southbound semi-trailer.

The two men, the driver and passenger, died at the scene. GoFundMe pages were set up in their memory following the loss.

Additionally, on February 18th, a fatal crash occurred on the Trans-Canada Highway north of Mill Bay, just before 5 p.m., when a two-vehicle collision resulted in the death of one man.

Investigators believe the driver of one of the vehicles may have suffered a medical emergency just prior to the crash, and two others sustained minor injuries.

Earlier in January, on the evening of January 30th, a fatal rollover crash on Alberni Highway in Coombs claimed the life of a 36-year-old man.

The single-vehicle crash occurred in the 2300 block of Alberni Highway, and the driver was found critically injured before later succumbing to his injuries in hospital.

Yesterday’s fatal crash occurred an hour before a serious multi-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway near View Royal. The crash involved four vehicles and sent two drivers to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
