BC to remove all American-made alcohol from shelves as US boycott expands

Premier David Eby held a press conference at a BCLiquor store in Victoria on Monday morning to announce the expansion of boycotts against United States-produced alcohol.

Initially, the BC government put legislation in place to have public liquor stores throughout the province pull products produced in Republican states from shelves.

Now, the policy does not just apply to “red states,” but all states.

Eby says that this is being done because of additional threats from President Donald Trump and the United States government.

“We have seen the threat of additional tariffs on the dairy industry, an investigation into our lumber industry by the president with the aim of adding even more tariffs and disturbing articles from the New York Times and other places of the president threatening to redraw our borders and pursue Canadian water,” said Premier Eby.

“Now, the reaction of many British Columbians, myself included, is if the president is so interested in Canadian water, then we’re going to help him out by letting him keep his watery beer.”

Going forward all wine, distilled products and beer that are produced in the United States will be pulled from BCLiquor stores’ shelves, effective immediately.

“We’re doing this for a couple reasons,” said Eby. “One is to respond to the escalating threats that we’re seeing from the United States.”

“The other is to recognize the feeling that many British Columbians have now when we look at American products—we don’t even want to see them on the shelf anymore.”

He added that it was initially a matter of strategy to go after red states, whose Republican leaders are supporting the tariffs against Canada.

However, due to public outcry, the BC government will be targeting all states equally in the boycott of their products in liquor stores.

Additionally, Eby says that in the coming days there will be more actions taken which include adding tariffs to vehicles travelling through BC to get to Alaska, working with the federal government to support their anti-tariff response, removing inter-provincial trade barriers and fast-tracking BC economy initiatives.
