Another earthquake shakes Vancouver Island late Wednesday afternoon

For the fourth time in just three weeks, residents of Greater Victoria have reported feeling the tremors of an earthquake originating across the border in Washington.

The latest earthquake, which struck on Wednesday, March 5th, at 4:24 p.m., measured 3.9 in magnitude and was located about 30 kilometres southeast of Port Angeles, Washington.

Port Angeles itself lies roughly 35 kilometres south of Victoria, and though the quake occurred at a depth of approximately 43 kilometres, its effects were still felt across the region.

Dozens reported on a Victoria Buzz post stating they felt the tremor, including residents in Victoria, Sooke, and Sidney.

This latest earthquake comes just days after another earthquake rattled the region early on Monday morning, March 3rf.

That quake, with a magnitude of 4.5, occurred about 10 kilometres off Orcas Island, Washington, and woke many residents across Greater Victoria.

Earthquakes Canada confirmed that no damage was reported from either event, and the likelihood of any significant impact remains low.

Seismologists explain that the frequency of earthquakes in this region is not unusual, given its location along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, where the Juan de Fuca Plate is slowly being pushed beneath the North American Plate.

While the tremors can be unsettling, they are a reminder of the active seismic activity in this area.
