Two men in their 60s were hospitalized after a mid-day attack in Port Alberni earlier this week.

In a media release, Port Alberni RCMP said the incident occurred just after 12 p.m. in the 3000 block of 4th Avenue.

Once on the scene, police located a 67-year-old man with injuries, but learned a second victim had left the area.

A short time later, a 64-year-old man showed up at the West Coast General Hospital with significant injuries. He was later transported to a hospital outside the community for further treatment.

After speaking with witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage from area residences and businesses, police said they arrested a 38-year-old man for aggravated assault and assault.

The suspect was held in custody and later released with several conditions. The Port Alberni General Investigation Section has taken over the investigation.

Police said they believe the victims and the suspect are known to each other, and they have no concerns for public safety.
