Nanaimo RCMP were kept busy earlier this week after receiving forty-two reports of car vandalism in a single night.
According to police, sometime overnight on Wednesday, December 11th, suspect(s) went on a “campaign of destruction,” smashing vehicle windows, flattening tires and breaking side vehicle mirrors.
The majority of incidents are said to have occurred between 11 p.m. on December 10th and 4:30 a.m. on December 11th.
All forty-two incidents involved vehicles either parked on the street or in parkades or parking lots.
In a media release, police said that on Harwell Road alone, nine vehicle owners reported their driver’s side window having been shattered.
When police arrived on the scene, they noted that it appeared as if a small projectile may have been fired at the windows.
Other incidents include Vancouver Island University, in which three vehicles had windows shattered.
Additional reports of destroyed windows, slashed tires and busted side mirrors occurred in the 6900 block of Island Highway north, 6600 block of Mary Ellen Drive, Garner Crescent, 400 block of Pine Street, 3800 and 2500 block of Jingle Pot Road and 650 Terminal Avenue.
“This is very disturbing and has caused immense disruption and significant financial loss to many vehicle owners,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
Several vehicles of interest have been identified. If anyone has dash cam video, eye witness evidence or CCTV from the areas listed and times noted, call Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
