Victoria’s Whistle Buoy Brewing launching official cornhole league this week

Cornhole is a game that can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone—all you need to do is simply toss a bean bag at a board with a hole in it and hope it goes in.

Well Whistle Buoy Brewing, located in Market Square, is stepping up and creating an official cornhole league for Victorians who enjoy the game.

The idea behind the Whistle Buoy Cornhole League is that teams of at least two can participate in the league anytime they‘re on the Whistle Buoy patio, plus there will be five league tournaments that will be held monthly from November to April.

Following the five tournaments will be the finals, where the top teams will face off for a grand prize of a $200 gift card to the brewery.

As an additional perk, beers will be $1 off for people participating in the monthly tournaments, prizes will be given away at every event and the patio will be heated during the tournaments.

Isaiah Archer, Co-owner of Whistle Buoy says the point of this endeavour is merely to bring some fun and competitive spirit to people through the winter.

“We have the space, we have the boards, we have the equipment, so we thought this would be a fun way to use the patio throughout the wintertime,” Archer told Victoria Buzz.

“We want it to be inclusive. Anyone can show up and play. If people want to get competitive, we’re trying to create the conditions for people to do that but it’s more about being social, getting out of your house and creating a nice space for people to interact.”

How does the league work?

Beginning Thursday, at the inaugural Whistle Buoy Cornhole League tournament, a QR code will be put up in the patio space. This will take teams to a simple online form where they will fill out with their team name, their opponents’ team name and who won.

The aim is that even outside of the set tournament dates, people can still participate and contend with the other league teams.

Archer says to rack up points in the league, all a team has to do is actually remember their name and enter it the same each time.

The tournaments will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on:

  • Thursday, November 28th
  • Thursday, December 12th
  • Thursday, January 16th
  • Thursday, February 13th
  • Thursday, March 13th

Archer and his colleagues will tally up all the scores that have been entered between November and the finals on April 17th, where the cream of the crop will face off for the grand prize.

For those who like the idea but don’t know how to play, official rules will also be posted on the patio to keep every participating team on the same page and abiding by the same standardized regulations.

Think you’ve got what it takes to play cornhole against Victoria’s best? Or maybe you just want to have fun and mess around playing with some friends?

Check out the Whistle Buoy patio this Thursday, or just play a round next time you are in at the brewery.
