Things are looking up, Victoria!
Destination Greater Victoria released a recent tourism impact study, revealing an overall bounce-back from the pandemic’s numbers.
Completed in collaboration with InterVISTAS Consulting and based on Statistics Canada, they were able to confirm that tourism continues to be a significant driver of employment and economic growth in the region.
Greater Victoria welcomed 4.9 million visitors in 2023, which generated $3.5 billion in economic outputs and contributed $2 billion to the region’s gross domestic product (GDP).
This major influence generates $1.9 billion in visitor spending, supports around 25,000 jobs and provides $1.1 billion in wages.
Not only does this impact the local economy, it also contributes to overall government revenues—which are essential for supporting public services, infrastructure development and community projects.
Of the $510 million from tax contributions, $30 million went to municipal taxes, $248 million to provincial taxes, and $232 million to federal taxes.
The report also states that since 2018, the impact from the visitor economy has grown sustainably, despite challenges faced from the pandemic.
GDP contributions have gone up 52%, growth in business sales has gone up by 39%, and the number of jobs supported has risen by 8%.
“The impressive growth in GDP, job support, and overall economic contributions underscores its importance,” said Paul Nursey, CEO of Destination Greater Victoria.
“The visitor economy not only supports businesses and creates jobs, but also enriches our community and enhances the quality of life for all residents.”
Destination Greater Victoria is hopeful for what 2025 will bring, and plans on revealing a 10-year master plan that will work to keep Victoria on an upward trajectory.
“[It] will outline ways the destination can maintain its place as a competitive, leading global destination and economic driver for generations to come,” the media release reads.
