‘The Grinch who stole Halloween’: Man snatches entire candy bowl from Langford home (VIDEO)

There really should a Grinch title for those that steal candy from kids on Halloween night.

Halloween trick-or-treating is a fun time for children to collect candy from neighbours in costumes. It’s a joyful outing for families, and it’s heartwarming to see the kids leave with smiles, ready for a sugar high that night.

Trick-or-treating is for kids, and treating yourself here and there is fine—but taking the entire stash when no one’s looking is a different story.

There are people out there of course who take advantage of the night to walk away with a large score for themselves.

A Langford resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, posted a video to the Victoria Buzz Facebook group showing an adult man pulling up to a home around 8:30 p.m. Halloween night in his car in the Thetis Heights area before running up to the porch and snatching an entire bowl of candy.

The entire sequence was captured on video, and there were no indications that any children were with him—he took the entire bowl and fled.

“We get a few candy thieves a year. We’re Halloween central out here though, 200+ kids. The odd dad tries to fill his pockets but that one was really wild,” said the poster.

The candy bowl was left out on the porch as an honour system while the family went out to trick-or-treat themselves.

Although the incident wasn’t officially reported, the video was posted online to raise awareness.

“It was kind of comical that he set his alarm exiting the vehicle, honking his horn. Not the sharpest criminal out there, I guess,” said the person who spoke with Victoria Buzz.

Candy theft from adults appears to be a big problem in the Thetis Heights neighbourhood.

“We’ve had adults stuff their pockets before which is always frustrating because we get hundreds of kids every year in this neighbourhood, we always run out, and those people are depriving children of candy loot.”

There has been a lot of discussion about this in our neighborhood group. Adults stealing candy being much worse than kids taking extra.

“It is my personal hope that the public shaming of this Halloween Grinch is enough to deter future candy bandits, and leave more candy for the kids.”
