An impaired driver was caught by Saanich Police travelling 73 km/h over the speed limit on Quadra Street.

On Sunday, August 18th, just before 11 p.m., Saanich Police officers say they stopped a vehicle doing 123 km/h in the 3900 block of Quadra Street.

The posted speed limit for that section of road is 50 km/h.

Police say the driver was issued a ticket for excessive speeding and administered a roadside test for impairment, which the driver failed.

As punishment, the motorist’s licence was suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

According to Saanich Police, this incident capped off a weekend of roadside check stops that resulted in 10 additional drivers being caught driving while impaired.

All other incidents resulted in the drivers having their licences suspended and most had their vehicles impounded.

“Impaired driving is a serious threat to public safety,” wrote a Saanich Police spokesperson in a media release.

“When you drive under the influence, you endanger not only your own life but the lives of everyone around you.”

Saanich Police recommend those who have consumed alcohol or drugs make the responsible choice to call a taxi, use a ride-sharing service, or arrange for a designated driver.
