Maintenance being conducted at the McLoughlin Wastewater Treatment Plant could cause intermittent odour in and around the Esquimalt area.
According to the Capital Regional District (CRD), the maintenance involves replacing all carbon in the wastewater treatment plant’s system, which is expected to be completed by August 2nd.
“The carbon that captures odours at various points in the system is nearing the end of useful life expectancy and is currently being replaced,” said the CRD in their statement.
“When carbon is nearing the end of its useful life, odours may increase.”
Ordinarily, the McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant effectively manages and controls odors released from the facility through its state-of-the-art odor control system, which is monitored around the clock.
Since its launch in 2020, Esquimalt residents have complained about odours emanating from the treatment plant.
However, the facility is designed to have a maximum odour concentration of less than five odour units per cubic metre, which most people would not be able to smell. The district remains committed to achieving that standard.
