The Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) will be offering a range of fun-filled activities for all ages throughout the summer.
From Baby Time to the BC Summer Reading Club and the Summer Challenge, the GVPL wants to spread literary cheer and get as many people reading as possible from June to September!
The BC Summer Reading Club is for children aged 12 and under, and provides them with a unique opportunity to discover the joys of reading while also strengthening their literacy skills.
Plus, there are fantastic prizes to be won! Kids can join at any point throughout the summer, just pick up a reading record at any GVPL branch to get started!
Try and get at least 20 minutes of reading time in each day—all types of reading material count, including audiobooks or being read to.
According to a GVPL media release, over 9,650 children in the Greater Victoria area participated in the reading club last year!
Another program includes the GVPL’s Read and Write Reviews (RAWR), for ages 10 to 18, and the Summer Challenge, for ages 13 and above.
Both programs kick off on July 2nd and run until September 3rd!
“Our Read and Write Reviews (RAWR) program invites participants to read and share their thoughts by submitting book reviews. Each review counts as an entry into our prize draw,” noted Cheryl Landry, Library Services Librarian.
“This virtual book review contest is a fantastic way for tweens and teens to engage with literature, express their thoughts, and potentially win exciting prizes.”
Landry added that the Summer Challenge includes 16 fun activities, and is a self-paced, bingo-style activity that aims to push readers outside of their comfort zone.
Challenge yourself to a complicated read—learn new vocabulary and cover complex topics!
For those interested in Summer Baby Times, Family Storytimes, and a series of StoryWalks, these also start in July.
GVPL notes that they’re interactive and designed for the youngest patrons and their families, helping to lay a crucial foundation for children’s lifelong learning while fostering a love for reading from an early age.
