The latest warning from the Capital Regional District (CRD) could make for some stinky strolls and dog walks around Mount Work Regional Park.
According to the CRD, the Residuals Treatment facility (RTF), which is located just north of the Hartland Landfill will be carrying out some routine maintenance that will be generating some intermittent odours that could spread throughout the region depending on the winds.
At the RTF, residual solid waste from the McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant is piped into the facility at Hartland Landfill. Here, they are treated and turned into Class A biosolids.
According to the CRD, these biosolids are a high quality by-product suitable for beneficial use.
In addition to Mount Work Regional Park, the CRD says that the area of Willis Point Road near the facility could be impacted by the odours.
This work which will cause the odours is scheduled to be completed by April 17th.
“Facility operators and CRD Staff are making every effort to limit the source and impact of the odours and will continue to monitor the odours as work proceeds,” said the CRD in their alert on the matter.
“CRD is mindful of the impact of odours on residents and is grateful to both our local community and recreational users for their patience.”
