A woman has been arrested and charged following a tense incident at a Nanaimo ferry terminal that allegedly involved a knife, threats and brass knuckles.
Nanaimo RCMP were called to the Hullo ferry terminal at 100 Port Way at around 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 4th.
According to police, the incident began after a woman attempted to board a sailing using a ticket from the previous day and was refused boarding.
Police said the woman became agitated and allegedly produced a knife while making threats toward employees at the terminal.
By the time officers arrived, the woman had left the immediate area.
RCMP located her a short distance away near the Helijet helipad, just south of the Hullo terminal, and took her into custody without incident.
Police said a knife was recovered along with a pair of brass knuckles.
Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien described the incident as a “volatile situation” and credited witnesses with providing important information to the 911 call-taker and responding officers.
The BC Prosecution Service has approved three charges against 55-year-old Dena Marie McCaughey which includes assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and wilfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
McCaughey was held in custody overnight and was expected to appear in court Monday.
She is also facing three unrelated charges stemming from a July 2025 incident in Colwood, including criminal harassment, harassing communications and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
