Water main repairs in View Royal to impact traffic along Trans-Canada Highway

The Capital Regional District (CRD) has announced additional repairs to the high-pressure regional water main must be undertaken in View Royal.

Work will be taking place from Monday, October 26th to approximately Saturday, October 31st along the Trans-Canada Highway between the Island Highway overpass and Six Mile Road overpass.

The CRD says that one northbound lane will be impacted for the duration of the work.

In September, a leak was repaired on this water main, located approximately 100 metres south of the work area.

While repairing this leak, further assessment of the water main was initiated which resulted in two more locations being identified for planned repairs.

The second location is located in Saanich and the CRD says it will be repaired before the end of the year.

According to the CRD, the 1.2-metre diameter steel water main is one of the largest mains in the system.

It serves communities on the Saanich Peninsula, including Sidney, Central Saanich, North Saanich, W̱SIKEM (Tseycum) First Nation, SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout) First Nation, W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) First Nation and BOḰEĆEN (Pauquachin) First Nation and Saanich including West Saanich, Knockan Hill, Royal Oak, Prospect Lake and portions of northwest Saanich.

While repairs are underway, the CRD asks that residents who are served by this main reduce water usage where possible.

“Whenever work is being completed on the water system, reducing demand during peak water use periods helps maintain reliable service,” said the CRD in a media release.

“While repairs are underway, residents and businesses on the Saanich Peninsula and Saanich can play an important role by reducing indoor water use during the peak demand periods in the morning and early evening.”

Examples of suggested water reductions include running dishwashers and laundry machines in the early afternoon or overnight, taking shorter morning showers and turning off the tap while brushing teeth.

The CRD noted that water quality is not expected to be affected.
