The Victoria Women in Need Community Collective, known locally as WIN, is celebrating 20 years of supporting women, trans, non-binary and Two-Spirit people in Greater Victoria.
The collective works with those navigating crises, change and rebuilding to help better their lives and build independence.
Over the last 20 years, the WIN says their approach has never changed: dignity and choice come first.
More than 31,000 people have accessed and participated in WIN’s programs, which are supported by a model built on resale, donations and community aid.
WIN’s resale shops located throughout Greater Victoria, their online store and community-funded programs have actively helped people access goods and support without judgement, pressure or having to prove their need.
“At the core of WIN is our community”, said Clare Yazganoglu, executive director of WIN.
“Each one of our donors, shoppers, program participants, community partners and the many local businesses that have stood with us, have been part of building the steady and compassionate care that is so fundamental to supporting people to move forward in their lives.”
She added that she is grateful for those who have been part of the 20-year journey.
Over the last 20 years, WIN has provided over $2.5 million in goods to people rebuilding their lives, helped furnish over 1,500 homes through their New Start Program, provided more than $89,000 in emergency funding to support people and given over $807,000 in WIN Gift Certificates, allowing people the freedom to choose exactly what they need, according to the organization.
Furthermore, the collective has provided $289,000 in Self Sufficiency Bursary funding and helped divert hundreds of thousands of pounds of goods from the landfill every year.
“I’ve seen just how much a small piece of support can mean to someone navigating an incredibly difficult time,” said Nicole Lapierre, program manager at WIN.
“A gift certificate that lets someone choose what they need, a home furnished after leaving violence or simply knowing someone is there to help connect them with resources can make a real difference.”
WIN is inviting the community to help build what comes next, by shopping, volunteering and donating goods and funds to help mark the 20-year milestone.
One way to do this is to support their Online Silent Auction, which is taking place from October 9th to 19th.
All collected funds will go toward helping those in need of support build a better life.
