According to VicPD, the incident occurred near Blanshard Street and Hillside Avenue at approximately 6 p.m. on Monday, October 26th.
Police say the unknown man allegedly followed the female youth and made inappropriate comments before she was able to return home safely.
Investigators have since obtained surveillance footage and are working to identify and locate the man for further questioning.
The suspect is described as approximately 5’6″ tall and was reportedly wearing a light-coloured baseball cap, a navy-blue puffy jacket, light-coloured sweatpants and dark shoes.
He was also carrying a red backpack. Police have not released an estimated age or additional identifying details.
VicPD says there is currently no indication of an immediate threat to public safety, although the investigation remains ongoing.
With Halloween approaching, police are using the incident as an opportunity to remind parents and caregivers to speak with their children about personal safety.
Officers encourage children to trust their instincts, leave situations that make them uncomfortable and seek help from a trusted adult, nearby business or neighbour.
Children are also encouraged to travel with friends or trusted adults, particularly after dark, and to make sure someone knows where they are going.
Police say the youth involved in Monday’s incident took the appropriate steps to keep herself safe.
