Esquimalt has officially elected its first new mayor in nearly two decades.
Duncan Cavens has stepped into the position after longtime Mayor Barb Desjardins decided she would not seek re-election, creating an open mayoral contest.
The race was split between Duncan Cavens and David Gauthier, with Cavens of course taking the win.
There are also some changes coming to Esquimalt’s council table, with six councillors elected to serve alongside Cavens over the next four years.
Tim Morrison topped the council race with 3,294 votes, followed by Tara Todesco (2,873), Meagan Brame (2,556), Andrea Boardman (2,480), Holly Courtright (2,385) and Kathryn Meredith James (2,384).
As one of Greater Victoria’s oldest municipalities, Esquimalt faces the challenge of embracing change while preserving the character that has set it apart from its neighbours for a long time.
From new housing developments and rising costs to infrastructure and policing, there will be plenty to tackle over the next four years.
