BC NDP incumbent Diana Gibson has been re-elected in Oak Bay-Gordon Head, securing a second term in the legislature following Saturday’s provincial election.
Gibson was declared elected with 9,198 votes, ahead of BC Conservative candidate Stan Sipos, who received 7,599 votes.
BC Green candidate Andrew Appleton followed in third with 5,452 votes, while former BC Green Party leader Andrew Weaver also appeared on the ballot, this time representing CentreBC.
The race was considerably closer than in 2024, when Gibson won the riding with 49.1% of the vote, defeating Conservative candidate Stephen Andrew by nearly 6,000 votes.
This time, Gibson’s lead over the Conservatives narrowed to 1,599 votes in the reported results.
Gibson was first elected in 2024, succeeding former BC NDP MLA Murray Rankin, who had represented the riding since 2020.
Before entering provincial politics, Gibson worked in community social planning and served as executive director of the Greater Victoria Community Social Planning Council. She also helped establish the Greater Victoria Rent Bank, which assists people facing housing insecurity.
Sipos, a local businessman and real estate developer, has been involved in several projects in Greater Victoria, including the Customs House redevelopment in downtown Victoria.
Appleton, meanwhile, is a two-term Oak Bay councillor with more than 25 years of experience in the environmental sector. He has also served as chair of the Greater Victoria Public Library board.
Perhaps the most familiar name on the ballot was Weaver, who was attempting a political comeback in the same riding he once represented.
Weaver made history in 2013 when he became the first BC Green Party MLA elected to the legislature. He later led the Greens through the 2017 provincial election, when the party won three seats and held the balance of power in a minority NDP government.
After leaving provincial politics in 2020, the University of Victoria climate scientist returned to academia before announcing his return to politics under the CentreBC banner this September.
Oak Bay-Gordon Head includes Oak Bay, Gordon Head, Cadboro Bay and portions of Saanich surrounding the University of Victoria.
At the time of publication, the reported results were:
- Diana Gibson (BC NDP) — 9,198 votes (elected)
- Stan Sipos (BC Conservatives) — 7,599 votes
- Andrew Appleton (BC Greens) — 5,452 votes
- Andrew Weaver (CentreBC) — vote total not available
The results remain preliminary, with Elections BC scheduled to begin its final count on November 6th.
