David Eby has conceded the provincial election and announced he will resign as premier and leader of the BC NDP, saying it is time for new leadership within the party.

His announcement comes as the BC Conservatives, led by Lorne Doerkson, are projected to form a majority government.

Speaking to supporters Saturday night, Eby delivered an emotional farewell, thanking his colleagues, volunteers, staff and family.

“It has been the honour of my life to serve as premier of British Columbia, to serve as MLA, to work with all of you,” he said.

Eby said he would be offering his resignation as both premier and party leader.

“This is obviously something I do with a very heavy heart, but it is time for new leadership within our party.”

Reflecting on his government’s record, Eby described a drive through Vancouver past a school and the old St. Paul’s Hospital, pointing to investments in education and health care.

He also highlighted what he described as progress on access to family doctors, falling rents and increases to the minimum wage.

“We did this in every corner of British Columbia as government, and we should all be proud of that,” he told supporters.

Eby said public life had come at a significant cost to his family and that he looked forward to spending more time with his children, wife and friends.

Despite the defeat, he encouraged supporters to celebrate newly elected colleagues and those stepping forward within the party.

“Thank you for all you do. I am so grateful, and I will never be able to repay.”
