West Shore RCMP are investigating an alleged case of animal cruelty in Langford after a disturbing video circulating on social media appeared to show a man mistreating a cat.

The incident reportedly occurred during the early morning hours of Monday, October 5th, at a residential building in Langford.

According to West Shore RCMP, officers responded to a report of an injured cat at a residence that morning.

The incident has since drawn widespread attention online, with videos prompting concern from residents about the animal’s well-being.

A witness who contacted Victoria Buzz said they witnessed the incident unfold shortly after 12:30 a.m.

The witness said they initially heard shouting and other disturbing noises before noticing a cat trapped between a window and a screen at a nearby residential building.

They alleged that a man was yelling at the animal before appearing to physically harm it.

The witness said they called 911 at approximately 12:44 a.m. after becoming increasingly concerned for the cat’s safety.

They also recorded portions of the incident and subsequently provided the footage to police and the BC SPCA.

In an email to Victoria Buzz, the witness expressed concern about how animal cruelty complaints are investigated and whether existing laws provide sufficient protection for animals.

When officers attended the residence, police said they located the cat, which was hissing and appeared distressed.

However, officers did not observe any obvious physical injuries at the time.

The Capital Regional District’s Animal Control department subsequently took custody of the cat for further examination and investigation.

Police confirmed that the man depicted in the circulating video cooperated with investigators and voluntarily relinquished any claim to the animal.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not announced any charges.

As the video continues to circulate online, West Shore RCMP are also urging members of the public not to take matters into their own hands.

Police have expressed concern about people sharing identifying information, including the man’s residential address, and warned against attempts at vigilante justice.

The RCMP are asking anyone with relevant information or evidence to contact investigators.

The cat’s current medical condition and whether it sustained any injuries have not been publicly confirmed.
