An award-winning Canadian documentary telling the story of a northern BC community’s experience with devastating wildfires is coming to Victoria next month.
The Fire in Our Hearts will screen at UVic’s Cinecenta theatre on Monday, November 2nd, bringing a story of wildfire, resilience and community-led emergency response to the big screen.
The documentary follows members of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation and residents of a remote northern BC community as they deal with the devastating wildfires that swept through the region in 2018 and what happened in the years that followed.
But the film isn’t only about the destruction left behind. Following their experience with the fires, community members created the Chinook Emergency Response Society and developed their own locally-driven approach to wildfire response.
According to organizers, the community-based system has since helped respond to 27 major fires.
The documentary explores that journey while highlighting the people behind the response, including Indigenous community members and local residents living in a region where wildfire has become an increasingly serious threat.
According to the film’s producers, the film has received several awards, including best environmental film at the Sundar Prize Film Festival, along with the best documentary and best cinematography at WorldFest-Houston.
Victoria audiences will have an opportunity to see the documentary locally when it screens at UVic’s Cinecenta on Monday, November 2nd.
With wildfires becoming a regular part of summers in BC and Vancouver Island, the documentary gives viewers a look at how one community was impacted and what they did to prepare for future fires.
Tickets and additional screening information are available through Cinecenta.
