A 36-year-old woman who was the subject of a large-scale police search in the Mount Tzouhalem and Maple Bay areas last week has been located and arrested.
North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP said officers found and arrested the woman on September 15th in connection with an ongoing investigation.
Her name has not been released.
Following her arrest, the woman was held in custody and appeared before the court. She was later released on court-imposed conditions and is scheduled to return to court at a future date.
The arrest comes six days after a major police search unfolded near Mount Tzouhalem and Maple Bay on September 9th.
Photos at the time of the incident appear to show the woman carrying what looks like a long gun near the trails that were shutdown. However, RCMP have not confirmed that the woman was armed.
At the time, the RCMP Emergency Response Team, Air Services and Police Dog Services were deployed, while members of the public were asked to avoid trails in the area.
The active search ended later that day, with police saying there was no ongoing risk to the public. However, officers had not yet located the woman and continued asking for information about her whereabouts.
“The active search has concluded, and there is no ongoing risk to public safety related to this investigation,” said Cst. Tessa McDonald, Media Relations Officer with North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at the time of the incident.
“We would like to thank the public for their cooperation, patience and assistance throughout the search and investigation.”
RCMP also thanked the Emergency Response Team, Air Services, Police Dog Services and members of the public who provided information during the investigation.
Police have not disclosed the nature of the alleged offence or details of any charge. RCMP said no further information will be released because the matter is now before the courts.
