Winds up to 80 km/h expected for Greater Victoria and Southern Gulf Islands

Hold onto your hats because September is kicking off with powerful winds across parts of Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands.

Environment Canada has issued a weather alert warning that strong southeast winds could produce gusts of up to 80 km/h along exposed coastal areas Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The winds are expected to increase throughout the afternoon as a cold front sweeps through the region.

According to Environment Canada, the strongest gusts are expected around Haro Strait, meaning exposed coastal communities along eastern Greater Victoria and throughout the Southern Gulf Islands could experience the most significant conditions.

Winds are forecast to reach 30 km/h with gusts up to 50 km/h across much of the region, while areas near Haro Strait could see sustained winds of 60 km/h and gusts reaching 80 km/h.

The strongest winds are expected late Wednesday afternoon and early in the evening. Conditions should begin easing later in the evening as the cold front moves out of the region.

The weather agency warned that local power outages are possible, particularly in areas where trees and branches come into contact with power lines.

Residents are being advised to secure loose outdoor objects, including patio furniture, umbrellas, decorations and garbage bins.

The weather is expected to remain mainly cloudy Thursday, although winds near Haro Strait may continue into the morning and early afternoon before easing.

Environment Canada asks residents to continue monitoring local alerts and forecasts throughout the day.
