Vancouver Islanders know about the wealth of great hiking in the area, but this week it’s getting some international love.
Travel + Leisure Magazine, a popular global travel publication, has named a hike on Vancouver Island as one of the top 10 Best Hiking Trails for Gorgeous Autumn Leaves Across the US and Canada.
The trail that made the list was Lighthouse Loop in Ucluelet.
It was one of only two Canadian hikes on the list, with the other being the Track and Tower Trail in Ontario.
The Lighthouse Loop is a small, scenic section of the Wild Pacific Trail, a popular hike in the Tofino area.
“British Columbia is known as a terrific place for the outdoorsy, and this hike on Vancouver Island’s west coast fits that reputation,” the website reads.
The loop is a 2.6 kilometre section of the full trail, featuring views of the Pacific Ocean and offering an opportunity to glimpse a whale or other marine wildlife. Of course, the Amphitrite Point Lighthouse is one of the hike’s highlights, which the publication said is particularly stunning at sunrise or sunset.
The magazine also highlighted the trail in Ucluelet as one of the most accessible on the list, with the ability to do parts of the hike with a stroller or wheelchair.
Other hikes mentioned on the list were the Springwater Corridor in Oregon, Tom’s Thumb in Arizona, Dismal Trail Loop in South Carolina, Haystack Mountain Trail in Vermont, Skyline Trail in Rainier Park in Washington, Laramie Peak in Wyoming and Virginia Creeper Trail in Southwest Virginia.
