Two hospitalized after knife attack at North Island College residence in Courtenay

Two people were taken to hospital following an aggravated assault at a North Island College residence early Wednesday morning.

Comox Valley RCMP said frontline officers were called to the college campus at approximately 12:53 a.m. on September 16th after receiving multiple reports of an assault involving an edged weapon.

Officers arrived and located two injured victims before identifying and arresting a suspect.

Both victims were transported to hospital and are expected to recover from their injuries, according to police.

The suspect, identified by RCMP as a 21-year-old man from Burnaby, remains in custody pending a court appearance.

The scene remained secured Wednesday morning as investigators examined the area and gathered evidence. The Comox Valley RCMP Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation with assistance from the Island District Forensic Identification Section.

“The investigation remains in its early stages, and officers are working diligently to uncover all of the circumstances surrounding this disturbing incident,” said Const. Monika Terragni of the Comox Valley RCMP.

“The motivation behind the assault remains under investigation.”

Police said there is currently no information suggesting an ongoing threat to students, staff or the wider community.

Comox Valley RCMP Victim Services is supporting the victims and witnesses affected by the incident. North Island College is also providing immediate and ongoing support to members of its campus community.
