Rainfall warning issued for parts of Vancouver Island with up to 100 mm expected

After several days of dry weather, a significant change is on the way for Vancouver Island.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for west Vancouver Island as a robust frontal system moves toward the region. Around 100 mm of rain is expected from Monday morning through Tuesday morning, with the heaviest rainfall targeting the west coast.

The system is also expected to bring strong and gusty westerly winds Monday night.

While Greater Victoria is not currently included in the rainfall warning, the capital region will also feel the effects of the incoming system. Clouds will increase Monday before rain develops Monday night and continues Tuesday.

Environment Canada is forecasting 15 to 25 mm of rain Monday night for the south coast, along with southeast winds of 30 km/h and gusts potentially reaching 50 km/h near the Strait of Georgia.

Conditions are expected to improve quickly behind the system, with drier and brighter weather returning Wednesday and temperatures remaining in the mid-to-upper teens through the remainder of the week.

For areas under the rainfall warning, Environment Canada says heavy rain could result in water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas. Washouts are possible near rivers, creeks and culverts, while localized utility outages are also possible.

The warning is currently in effect for west Vancouver Island.
