New urgent and primary care centre coming to Sooke as part of housing development

Sooke residents and those living in surrounding communities will soon have a new urgent and primary care centre (UPCC) in their community.

According to the BC government, building permits have been approved for a new development that will combine health services and housing at 2101 Sitka Court, formerly 6651 Wadams Way.

The UPCC will be situated in a six-storey residential housing complex that will be developed by Catalyst Community Developments. 

The land on which the development will be built is being provided by the District of Sooke.

“With the building permits now approved, we are one step further to deliver on our commitment to ensure people in Sooke get primary care services close to home,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Health. 

Kahlon noted that since 2018, the Province has seen 48 UPCCs opened across BC, including 12 on Vancouver Island.

“This project is moving from plans on paper to work on the ground,” said Maja Tait, mayor of Sooke. 

“By bringing health care and housing together on one site, we are creating a community asset shaped by needs.”

Tait added that the approval of this project reflects years of patience, advocacy and partnership. 

“It will help residents access care closer to home while providing rental homes for people and families,” she said. 

Construction is expected to start later this year with site clearing and early work beginning soon. 

Once open, patients will be contacted for an appointment, and can expect to receive urgent access to primary care services from doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

The Province is committing approximately $8 million in capital funding to see the project through to fruition.
