5 things to do in and around Victoria this Wednesday, September 30th 

It’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Take part and show solidarity this Wednesday with one of the many events happening around the city to honour and remember the victims and survivors or residential schools.

There’s plenty to do, from the sixth annual South Island Powwow to an Indigenous Fashion show at the lower causeway downtown.

There are also a couple of comedy events and an Indigenous hip-hop show to keep your evening busy!

Here are 5 things to do in and around Victoria this Wednesday, September 30th:

Songhees Nation South Island Powwow at Royal Athletic Park

The annual South Island Powwow is hosted by the Songhees Nation in Royal Athletic Park.

The gathering is one of the biggest events on Vancouver Island in support of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and brings thousands to the park each year for ceremony, food, education and vendors.

The annual South Island Powwow is an opportunity to recognize survivors and their families in the spirit of reconciliation.

Through song and dance, the Powwow will celebrate traditional Indigenous cultures and resiliency.

The South Island Powwow is a great place to bring the family to shop from Indigenous vendors, see performances and learn.

The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

In the afternoon, a group will walk from Royal Athletic Park to Protocol Corner in the Lower Causeway in downtown Victoria for an Indigenous fashion show.

First Nations Fashion Show at Protocol Corner on the Lower Causeway

On Wednesday afternoon, Indigenous youth will walk from the South Island Powwow to the harbour for a fashion show while wearing ribbon skirts created by Aunty Collective.

The event is brought to Victoria by Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week, and hosted by the Songhees Nation and xʷsepsəm (Esquimalt) Nation.

The fashion show will include Cowichan knits by Knit with Purpose and designs from Ay Lelum.

The show is free to attend and everyone is welcome.

Fernwood Comedy Night

Head down to the Fernwood Inn for this month’s Fernwood Comedy Night!

May’s headliner is Darren Millar. The show will also feature Jon David, Willem Roelants, Keira Ash, Michael Booth and Feminem.

Organizers suggest arriving 30 minutes before the show.

Mostly Open_Mike at Archer’s Community Centre

The Mostly Open_Mike is a shake up of the conventional open mic format.

Think of it as on the job training for comics with a professional asshole on site.

Host Open_Mike_Comedy is just that, open in his opinion of comedy, and painfully honest.

Which is why he is being accompanied by a small panel of likeable individuals.

This show will have one to three booked pro comic spots free of criticism from the panel for your enjoyment.

It is important to note that this show is not inviting nor promoting heckling of comics but rather encouraging the practice of critical thinking and spontaneous action.

Rhymes for Reconciliation at Lucky Bar

Head to Lucky Bar and support an Indigenous Hip-Hop artists event.

During this show, attendees will be supporting QomQem Coastal Connections again this year.

Performances will feature The Vic City Soldierz and Stray Dogs.
